The Prayer of Surrender in Gethsemane
“He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.”
-Luke 22:44
In this artwork I aimed to capture the moment of Jesus in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Amid the critical decision he faces, Jesus’ anguish is so intense that his sweat becomes like drops of blood falling to the ground. I used deep blues to add to the solemnity of the scene, with a soft light illuminating Jesus’ face, hoping to represent a divine glow of his communion with the Father. In the background, an olive tree stands silently, its flowing bark and sparse fruits symbolizing peace, resilience, and the immensity of creation. I hope this depiction can serve as a reminder the surrender that should accompany our every prayer. He knew what was about to happen, and although he didn’t want it, he was willing. This powerful scene reflects the greatest act of obedience and the ultimate act of surrender to the Father’s will.
